Features

Below is a selection of the features at FOJCX.
Our features are designed to run in both directions to offer flexibility when setting new courses (note: step features, including the Staircase only ever run up).

Sandpits
We have 2 sandpits in close succession, slightly uphill or downhill depending course direction. PRO TIP: if the course is muddy, consider running the sand to save your drive train. The soil has a high clay content and is very sticky when wet (not to mention slippery). Mud & sand is not the best combination, especially if going full noise up the 'the hill'. The photo above is of an early lap in A grade men going uphill, hence the congestion. (2nd photo shows slight downhill with no shortage of off-camber in the background)

Jacob's ladder
Named in honour of Lisa Jacobs upon her retirement from International competition, Jacob's ladder is designed to be a dismount feature. Having said that, a small percentage of riders do ride it, and benefit from being clipped in ready to go once clear of the feature. This avoids an off-camber remount and potentially means good momentum for the hill that often follows shortly after. (This feature looks narrow but is 3 meters wide).

The Hill
Sometimes referred to as The Apocalypse, this hill is short and sharp. Sometimes it is unrideable, sometimes it turns on the hero dirt and the faster Juniors will fly up it. We do occasionally use part of it as a descent, but normally it is up. This area is a crowd favourite and central to the main viewing area.

The Big Berm

A berm leading into some whoops. Some riders see some serious speeds through here. This has been widened for MELGPCX this year.

The Whoops

A series of whoops that reward pump skills. These whoops have also been widened for MELGPCX. There will be passing opportunities through here which should make for exciting racing and great viewing.

The Staircase

The staircase takes riders from the bottom of the course to the top. It has 4 steps, closely spaced at the bottom and widely spaced at the top. This feature is rideable in pretty much all conditions but  does have an energy cost. Running is slightly slower, but not by much.

Off Camber for Dayz
We have no shortage of off-camber, which can make for some interesting remounts if you find yourself on the wrong side of the bike.

The Step

The Step will not feature at MELGPCX (Jacob's Ladder will feature instead)
